Auto Insurance Coverage Types Explained

Educational information — not insurance advice.

Auto insurance is really a bundle of separate coverages. Knowing what each one does helps you compare apples to apples.

Liability

Pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others. Most states require it at minimum levels. It does not repair your own car.

Collision

Repairs or replaces your car after a collision, regardless of fault, minus your deductible.

Comprehensive

Covers non-collision damage: theft, fire, weather, vandalism, and animal strikes, minus your deductible.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist

Protects you when an at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. Required in some states.

Medical payments / PIP

Helps with medical costs after an accident, regardless of fault. PIP is required in some states.
